Little Lamb's Ministries Diaper Bank 

The mission of Little Lambs is to assist in meeting the basic needs of families in Hays County through the provisions of diapers. It's simple - you attend and participate in one of the activities on the Little Lamb's calendar, and you receive FREE diapers. Activities are geared toward creating healthier families! Little Lamb's provides two free packages of diapers a month to families with children ages 3 and under. Prescription Assistance Program, Community Action Inc

Prescription Assistance Program provides for maintenance prescriptions by utilizing the free prescription programs operated by the major pharmaceutical companies to meet the needs of uninsured Hays County residents. The program provides access to currently existing free patient assistance programs operated by the major pharmaceutical companies. The program takes referrals from area physicians, screens patients to check for eligibility, and then sets up appointments to meet with eligible patients. Staff members then gather required information from patients and complete appropriate pharmaceutical company applications. Applications are tracked to confirm that patients are receiving their medication, and patients are contacted when it is time to reapply to the pharmaceutical companies.

Texas Workforce Commission to Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Region, Child Care Service 

Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Region is able to provide financial aid for eligible families.  
​Eligibility criteria to receive Child Care Services (CCS) include:
  • Each parent and step-parent, living in the household, must be working, attending school, in training/other educational program, or combination of these, at least an average of 25 hours each week over a four-week period. Household members include those that live in the household: parents, step-parents, adult dependents and a child or other minor living in the household who is the responsibility of the parent. 
  • Meet income guidelines based on gross household income (before taxes) and family size.  
  • The person applying for services must have primary custody of the child(ren) needing services. 
  • Families must live within these counties: Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Llano, or Williamson. 
  • Families who owe recoupment, anywhere in Texas, are not eligible to enroll or continue services until the recoupment has been paid in full.

Family Self Sufficiency Program (FSS)

Participants learn new skills that enable them to gain employment with a living wage, build savings, improve credit scores, and otherwise learn how to become more self-sufficient. Bring your completed application to the next FSS Orientation session held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Chapultepec Adult Learning Center. They will not accept an application until you attend the orientation.

Family Promise of New Braunfels

Family Promise of New Braunfels is a program that helps homeless, low-income families achieve and maintain independence. The family completes their comprehensive shelter program and the goal of the program is to move families out of homelessness and into safe housing. Other goals of the program include permanent full-time employment, safe reliable childcare, emergency savings, budgeting skills and reliable transportation. Once a family “graduates” and moves into their own home, they transition into A New Lease on Life aftercare program where they continue to receive professional case management support for one year. Compassion Community Closet

​Compassion Community Closet offers clothing, shoes, and accessories free of charge for those in need. Open Monday-Friday from 4-6pm. Saturday & Sunday by appointment. It is located at 208 Laredo St. in San Marcos @ Sinai Pentecostal Church. Text 512-214-1731 with questions.

The Salvation Army and Jusin Time Thriftstore

The Salvation Army provides social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. Salvation Army of San Marcos specifically provides utility assistance and help with some prescriptions. They also provide clothing vouchers for clothing needed for work (shoes, pants, work uniforms). The Salvation Army of San Marcos works together with Justin Time Thrift Store. The store is in San Marcos for access to household items and clothing. FREE Tax Aid

San Marcos Public Library is hosting free tax aid. No appointment is necessary; first come, first served. Bring all tax related documents, including last year’s tax return, social security cards for all dependents and a photo ID. Arrive an hour early to sign in and get in line!
  • Mondays in February, 3:00pm-6:00pm (except Feb 18)
  • Saturdays in February, 10:00am-1:00pm.

Legal Aid Clinics

Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos hosts legal aid clinics provided by Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid. This service is free for Hays county residents. Contact Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos for dates and times: (512) 878-0640. *They do not answer questions about immigration or criminal issues.

Hands of Hope

Hands of Hope is a tuition free, ten week semester, educational program for women. They provide an array of life and job skills training. You will learn academic skills, job readiness, time and money management and be equipped with better employment opportunities. ESL, transportation, and child care available. Car Seat Assistance

​Buda Fire Department has certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians on staff. They can inspect and ensure your car seat is the correct type of seat and installed properly in your vehicle. Along with this, they provide families with car seats if they are in need of one. 
  • Buda Fire Dept Car Seat Requests

Free Car Seat Program if you have CHIP or STAR and are Currently Pregnant 

If you have CHIP or STAR and you’re pregnant, you can earn points to receive a free car seat from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX).  To get the car seat, you will need to earn four (4) points. Here’s how to earn points: 
  • Visit your doctor for your first prenatal visit during the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy or during the first month of your enrollment in our plan (earn two (2) points) 
  • See your doctor for four (4) prenatal visits (earn one (1) point) 
  • See your doctor for six (6) prenatal visits (earn two (2) points) 
  • See your doctor for eight (8) prenatal visits (earn three (3) points) 
  • Enroll in the free Future Mom’s Prenatal Program (earn one (1) point)

Safe Riders: Free Car Seat Program

Safe Riders is an educational and safety seat distribution program. The Texas Department of State Health Services runs the Child Safety Seat Distribution and Education Program. The program informs caregivers about child passenger safety and provides free car seats to low-income families. To receive a car seat, at least one of the child's primary caregivers must participate in a one-hour child passenger safety class. Although you don't need to have your own vehicle, someone in the household must have one. The program does not provide infant carriers, but convertible rear and forward facing seats are available. For older children, booster seats are provided. Call 800-252-8255 for more information or to schedule a child passenger safety class. 

FREE Car Seats Installation, Inspections, & Assistance 

The Buda Fire Department and Austin Travis County EMS have partnered under a Federal Grant to provide expanded assistance for Child Safety Seat programs. Buda Fire Department has certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians on staff. They can inspect and ensure your car seat is the correct type of seat and installed properly in your vehicle. Along with this, they provide families with car seats if they are in need of one. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families 

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program is designed to help families with basic needs.
  • TANF Cash Help for Families 
  • One-Time TANF for Families in Crisis 
(TANF) program is a support service that provides income assistance to Texas families to help cover the costs of basic living needs. Families with children under the age of 18 are given access to financial and medical assistance that can help buy necessities including food, clothing, transportation and more. TANF is for families with children age 18 and younger. Families who can get this help have little to no money or don’t have a way to get money. A family can be: (1) parents and their children, or (2) relatives caring for related children. TANF offers monthly cash payments to help pay for: 

  • Food 
  • Clothing 
  • Housing 
  • Utilities 
  • Furniture 
  • Transportation 
  • Phone 
  • Laundry 
  • Supplies for the home 
  • Medical supplies not paid for by Medicaid 
  • Other basic needs 

 To see if a family can get TANF, the program must look at: 

  • The amount of money the family has. 
  • The value of things the family is paying for or owns. 
  • The amount the family pays for child care and child support.

Have a Heart Thrift Store

Every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Central Texas Medical Center Hospice’s Have a Heart Thrift Store runs their “Stuff the Bag” deal for just $8.00. Head over to 1315 IH 35 North, San Marcos TX to stuff your bag!

South Side Community Center 

Southside Community Center provides assistance with utilities or rent. Southside Community Center receives funding every month to help those in need with either their rent or utilities. With your application you must submit pay stubs that verify your income, if you are unemployed please mention that in your application. A valid driver’s license and copy of rental agreement or utility bill must also be included. If you submit your application via email or fax, please call ahead so we can file the application appropriately. Call 512-392-6694 for questions.

  • You can only apply for specific assistance once every six months. 
  • They do not help with deposits
  • They cannot help with rent balances that exceed $200. 
  • You can only get one KIND of specific assistance every six months (No rent and utilities simultaneously, for example) 
  • If your application is not 100% filled out you cannot be considered for assistance.  
  • Processing your application takes several days so do not wait until your bill is way overdue before applying. 
  • They send payment directly to a landlord, utility company, never to the person applying.

Utility Assistance

Community Action, Inc. of Central Texas announces the availability of funding for the Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program (C.E.A.P.) provided by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs.  Funds are available to assist qualified families in Hays, Caldwell, and Blanco Counties with their electric, butane, propane, and natural gas bills. 

CEAP (Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program) 

  • Primary program for energy assistance 
  • Available for residents of Hays, Caldwell, and Blanco counties 
  • Services include energy education, needs assessment, budget counseling, utility payment assistance, and crisis-related purchase of portable heating and cooling units 
  • Priority given to low income households with high energy use, a high energy burden, or the presence of a child (age 5 or under), disabled, elderly individuals, or veterans 
  • Completed application with documentation is required 

Pedernales Electric Cooperative MAP Funds 
  • Funded by PEC for PEC customers only – Hays, Caldwell, and Blanco Counties 
  • Income eligibility requirements: at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines 
  • Assistance includes payment of electric usage only 
  • Maximum assistance of $300 annually per household 
  • Completed application with documentation is required 
  • Program Year: January – December

  • Applicants must live in the WISD area to receive financial support, however for people that don’t, they have a data bank of resources for Hays County as well.
  • The charity organization provides limited payment assistance for mortgages, medical bills, rent, and prescription drugs. Some money may be offered for utility bills too, including gas, electric, and water.
  • Provides free vouchers to be used to pay for gas, clothing and more.
